Job Summary: This position is an excellent opportunity to train in the care and medicine of aquatic animals. Areas of concentration include husbandry, microbiology, internal medicine, radiology, ultrasound, geriatric medicine, nutrition and preventative medicine. The Associate Veterinarian will participate in the health care of Atlantis’ marine animals and will assist the Staff Veterinarian in establishing and conducting effective quarantine and testing procedures for all incoming animals to ensure the health of the collection, prevent the spread of disease and comply with all government regulations. Conducts regularly scheduled preventative care programs to maintain the health of the animals and guard against communicable diseases. Participates with Staff Veterinarian in planning and executing nutrition, quarantine, and reproductive programs. Participates in employee training in the proper handling and care of the animals. Conducts postmortem studies and analyses. Cooperates with other zoo and aquarium personnel to exchange information concerning the care of animals.
Required Qualifications:
Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited institution or completion of Foreign National Boards
Must hold and maintain a valid veterinary license
In the Bahamas; must be (or become) registered under the provisions of section 5 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act
Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a DVM in veterinary medicine. Experience with non-domestic species preferred.
Scuba Certification preferred
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Perform clinical procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and surgery as required.
Demonstrate a strong dedication and initiative to learning the biology, husbandry and medicine of exotic (non-domestic) animals in captivity.
Ability to conduct applied clinical research and to present research findings at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
