Spring Internship: Jan 2nd, 2019 – April 30, 2019 

30hrs Per Week

These are non-paid Animal Care positions that will help applicants gain knowledge of the care, husbandry, and training of Pinnipeds. This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates interested in learning more about the daily responsibilities of caring for animals in human care. Interns will achieve knowledge of South American sea lions and California sea lions by observing and working with experienced trainers on a daily basis. Intern duties include, but are not limited to; cleaning of animal exhibits, daily facility cleaning, diet preparation, record keeping, water quality testing, assisting/observing animal training sessions, and animal enrichment.

Squalus Inc. is a sea lion rescue based in Myakka City, Florida. We are a small USDA inspected facility that is committed to providing an extraordinary home for rescued sea lions, in part with NOAA, while inspiring awareness about the environment, conservation, and the preservation of marine life.

Essential Responsibilities

-Animal diet preparation 

-Assisting in facility maintenance 

-Facility cleaning and sanitation

-Learning basic water quality and pump maintenance

-Assisting with animal presentations which includes speaking on a microphone and working sound equipment 

-Design original enrichment

-Completing weekly readings and quizzes

-Can work up to feeding the sea lions and asking for basic behaviors

-Interact daily with guests

Requested Requirements

-Must be at least 18 years old

-Must be able to provide own housing and transportation as this is an unpaid internship

-Must be available for the full 12 week internship

-Must be able to work in all weather conditions

-Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions

-Must be able to work 30hrs per week. (Weekends and Holidays Required)

-Must be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around the exhibits

-Must be physically able to lift 50lbs

-Must be able to adapt to a changing work environment

-Must be self motivated and able to work solo or in a team setting
